Nova Surgicare invites you to experience the “ultimate skin boost” with one of our cellular rejuvenating chemical peels.
The Origins of Chemical Peels
Used for more than 2500 years, the revitalizing benefits of peels were recognized by ancient civilizations stretching from the Nile River to the western shores of Europe. Popular skin perfecting remedies included sour milk, a natural source of lactic acid: sugar cane, the primary component of glycolic acid: as well as grapes and citrus fruits, containing rich levels of tartaric and alpha hydroxy acid.
Of course, the ancients knew nothing of the science behind the organic skin care rituals they adapted nor could they anticipate that these acids would become the precursors of our modern day chemical peels, they simply observed and enjoyed the fresher, brighter, more radiant skin that accompanied their use. During the dark ages, knowledge of these ancient therapies largely disappeared and remained dormant until chemists in the twentieth century began to study their revivifying abilities in clinical settings.
The Benefits of Chemical Peels
We now know that cellular metabolism (the rate at which cells absorb nutrients, construct proteins and reproduce) slows down as part of the normal aging process. As a result, the amount of time that cells require to migrate from the dermis (the deeper layers of the skin) to the epidermis (the outermost layers of the skin) increases from an average of 28 days to 40 days or more. With the slowdown in cell turnover fibroblast production (the building blocks of collagen) is impaired and is followed by slightly irregular cell reproduction as compared to the spherical formation found in younger individuals. A sallow, tired looking complexion is a common development, as are pigmentation changes, fine lines and wrinkles, and an overall thinning of the outer skin layer.
Among the exciting discoveries chemists made when they studied the benefits of lactic, tartaric, glycolic and alpha hydroxy were the acids’ abilities to increase cellular turnover… promoting skin that not only looks younger but also acts younger. As discussed earlier in this blog, lactic, tartaric, glycolic and alpha hydroxy acids are all organic substances found in nature and have been used for thousands of years. However, modern capabilities allow us to replicate these molecular structures in laboratories allowing for greater efficacy and more controlled results. In chemical peels each acid and combination of acids has its own unique benefits designed to stimulate collagen production, smooth fine lines and wrinkles, and promote a clearer, smoother more refined and flawless complexion.
The chemical peels Dr. Hamrah has selected for use at Nova Surgicare’s Medspa range from light, medium and deep. Each category of peels possesses a set of distinct properties that can address conditions such as skin clarity, pigmentation problems, acne and aging.
Light chemical peels exfoliate the outermost layer of the epidermis. They can be performed in as little as 15 minutes and involve no downtime, dubbing them the perfect “lunchtime peel,” As their name implies, medium and deep peels reach further down and require a bit of recovery. However, with results that literally transform the functionality of the skin a few days of chafing and peeling is a small inconvenience for skin that looks and behaves ten years younger.
