Sinus Lift
What is a Sinus Lift
A Sinus lift, otherwise known as a sinus graft or sinus augmentation is a surgical procedure performed to add bone to the upper jaw. The specific area is the site of the molars and premolars with the objective of making them taller. The bone is added between the jaw and the maxillary sinus. The sinus cavities are located on either side of the nose. In order to make room for the bone, the sinus membrane must be moved upward, or lifted. This procedure prepares a site for a dental implant in the upper jaw. The success and longevity of a dental implant relies heavily on the jawbone to which it will attach. A skilled oral surgeon is paramount to graft additional bone to serve as an anchor for the implant.
How is this procedure performed
In most cases a small incision is made on the premolar or molar region to expose the jawbone then a small opening is cut into the bone and the membrane lining and the sinus is lifted or pushed upwards. The underlying space is filled with a bone grafting material. After the bone is implanted, the incision is stitched up and the healing process begins. Eventually, the bone becomes part of the jaw and the dental implants can be inserted and stabilized in the new bone.
Am I a candidate for a Sinus Lift
A sinus lift would be beneficial for those patients who
- Are missing more than one tooth in the back of the jaw
- Are missing a significant amount of bone in the back of the jaw
- Are missing teeth due to a birth defect or specific condition
- Are missing maxillary teeth and require support for dental implants
