Rhinoplasty Types

Facial cosmetic surgeon Dr. Daria Hamrah has a unique understanding of facial aesthetics. Dr. Hamrah can perform both open and closed rhinoplasty for rhinoplasty candidates. One technique will be chosen over the other based on your cosmetic goals for your nose.

Dr. Hamrah understands the relationship between your nose appearance and the underlying nasal structure. Using the right cosmetic procedure, Dr. Hamrah can create an appealing nose complementing your other facial features. In Northern Virginia, rhinoplasty questions concerning technique and other aspects of surgery can be answered by Dr. Hamrah.

Open Rhinoplasty Technique

Between your nostrils is a column of skin called the “columella.” In an open rhinoplasty, a horizontal incision is made across your columella. This incision lets Dr. Hamrah fold the nasal skin back, exposing the tip of the nose. Additional incisions are made within the nose as needed.

The open technique gives Dr. Hamrah a clear view of your underlying nose structure. Depending on the circumstances, an open rhinoplasty may be advantageous. In some cases, reshaping of the nose tip is best performed in the open technique. There may be other reasons Dr. Hamrah would want to use the open technique for your rhinoplasty; technique is highly dependent on the unique factors surrounding your nose surgery.

Closed Rhinoplasty Technique

In a closed rhinoplasty, incisions are made within the nose only. There is no incision made in the columella or elsewhere on the outside of your nose.

If the closed technique is right for your rhinoplasty, there are several advantages, including:

  • Faster recovery
  • Less post-operative swelling
  • No scars on the outside of your nose

Even with these advantages, you, as our patient, are unlikely to experience significant differences between the two techniques. Even though an open rhinoplasty creates an incision scar on the columella, Dr. Hamrah creates only the most minimal of incisions and scarring will not be obvious.

After Dr. Hamrah assesses your nose and understands the exact goals you have for your nose appearance, he can explain the most effective surgical method to create the nose shape and size you have in mind. Most experienced facial cosmetic surgeons can perform either form of rhinoplasty successfully, and will choose one or the other based on necessary procedural steps during your surgery.
